Characteristics
Like a gopher
The desert tortoise lives in the heart of the Mojave desert in the West of North America. On especially hot days, temperatures can reach 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius). On these days, it needs a cool place to hide. It uses its shovel-like front legs to dig a hole. As it spends so much time underneath the ground, it’s also called the “gopher turtle” .
