Treehopper
Fantasy or horror character?
Scientific name: Bocydium globulare
Habitat: South America
The treehopper bocydium globulare from South America has a stick with four small balls on it sticking out from its head. You might think that they’re eyes, letting the insect see better.
Its eyes are actually on the side of its head. The balls are made from a shell-like material. It’s not completely clear what they do. The long stick and the balls on its “headdress” do make it harder for predators to swallow the treehopper. So maybe it’s a kind of defense mechanism.
