Microbat vs. Flying Fox - What's the Difference?

5. Diet

BatDiet
Microbat Insects, more rarely nectar, fruits, small vertebrates, blood
Flying fox Fruits, nectar, pollen

Microbat

Most microbat species primarily eat insects. In warmer areas there are some species that feed on nectar and fruit - like flying foxes do.

Larger species also prey on small rodents, small birds, frogs and fish.

There are also microbats that feed on blood: vampire bats. There are only three types of them. All of them live in America.

Flying Fox

Flying foxes feed primarily on fruits, nectar and pollen. Because of their preference for fruits, they are also called “fruit bats”.

While they eat, they also pollinate flowers. In some areas their presence is crucial for the environment, because some plant species rely on flying foxes as pollinators.
