All About Lizards
Long tail, four nimble legs, and a superpower: "Tail shedding" – discover everything about lizards!
What Are lizards?
Lizards are small to medium-sized reptiles. Most have four legs, a long tail, and can move very quickly. Many can shed their tails if a predator grabs them. The tail regrows afterward. They inhabit sunny areas because they need to warm their bodies using the sun. Lizards are excellent climbers and masters of hiding.
Main Characteristics of Lizards
1. Four Legs
Most lizards have four legs – except for a few species like the slow worm. Their legs are quite strong. Depending on their habitat, they help them grip well or run fast.
2. Long Tail
Most lizards possess a long tail. It aids in maintaining balance while running, climbing, and jumping. Additionally, it serves as a storage for fat reserves – similar to the humps on a camel. Their ability to shed their tail is particularly impressive. If they are caught by a predator, the tail breaks off, allowing them to escape quickly. This can save their lives. Although it takes several weeks to months, the tail will regrow. However, the new tail is usually shorter and less flexible.
3. Slender, Long Body
Most lizards have a long, slender body. This makes them very agile, allowing them to hide well in small rock crevices. Larger lizards like monitor lizards, iguanas, and chameleons also have long bodies, but theirs tend to be broader and sturdier.

Amazing Facts About Lizards
- There are over 5,000 species of lizards.
- The most well-known include the chameleon, Komodo dragon, slow worm, and iguana.
- Most lizards are carnivorous, while some are omnivores and a few are herbivores.
- Lizards are categorized into four groups: iguanas, geckos, skinks, and slow worms.

- Skinks have a cone-shaped head that tapers towards the snout, with smooth, shiny scales that resemble armor.
- Slow worms often resemble snakes, such as the common slow worm or blind worm, but they also include four-legged creatures like the Komodo dragon.
