About Famous Cats and Their Names

Record Breakers Beginning With M

• Missi – has the longest whiskers

Missi, a Maine Coon from Finland, officially has the longest whiskers in the world. According to the Guinness Book of World Records (2005), they are 7.4 inch (19 cm) long! By the way, her full name is “Fullmoon’s Miss American Pie”. For anyone that’s ever wondered why a cat has whiskers: they use them to find their way e.g. in the dark. Whiskers are like sensors that show them where obstacles are, and which paths are too tight. The older a cat, the longer its whiskers. Because they don’t move as well and need more space. Whiskers can also show how a cat is feeling. If they are widely spaced and pointed forwards, the cat is tense or especially attentive. If the whiskers are flat to the sides, the cat is relaxed.

Colonel Meow was the cat with the longest fur in 2013 - 2014. Her longest hair was 9 inch (22.87 cm) long! She lived in California and was a cross between a Himalayan and a Persian. She sadly died at the start of 2014. The current record of 10.11 inch (25.68 cm) is held by Sophie Smith.

• Merlin - purrs the loudest

Merlin is a simple house cat from England. At first glance! But when he starts to purr, you might expect the pictures to start falling from the walls. He reaches a volume of 67.9 Decibels. That’s as loud as a car driving past, or a lawnmower. The world record was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records in April 2015. Until 2011, a cat called Smokey held the record.p>

• Meow - the heaviest cat

A normal cat weighs around 6.6-13.2 lbs (3-6 kg) depending on its breed and size. Meow from Santa Fe (New Mexico) weighed an impressive 39.6 lbs (18 kg). He was the heaviest cat in the world until 2012. When his owner, an 87 year old man, wasn’t able to look after him anymore, Meow ended up in a shelter, where he was supposed to lose some weight. He sadly died after having serious trouble breathing. Please never overfeed your pet! As funny as a record might sound, it’s sad and awful when a pet suffers and - like in the case of Meow - dies.

Famous Cats Beginning With M

• Macavity - likes to take the bus

Macavity, a white tomcat with one green and one blue eye has an unusual hobby: he likes to take the bus. Since 2007, he has been hopping on the public city bus several times a week and even runs to the bus stop if he’s late. He travels two to three stops and then gets off again. Maybe he wants to get to the fishmonger? We just don’t know.
