What Are Storks?

Storks are birds that are perfectly adapted to life in shallow water. Their legs are so long that they can wade through lakes, rivers, and marshes without getting their feathers wet. In these environments, they hunt for fish, amphibians, reptiles, or invertebrates. Most of them have long necks and pointed beaks. The stork family primarily includes wading birds, although it is still scientifically unclear whether flamingos belong to this group.

Main Characteristics of Storks and Flamingos

1. They Have Long Legs

Storks have a significant advantage over other birds: they can calmly walk through shallow water and search for prey there. This means that more prey is accessible to them than to other birds with shorter legs.

2. They Have a Long Neck

It would be quite impractical to wade through water with long legs but be unable to catch prey because their heads can't reach low enough. Therefore, storks have a very long, slender, and flexible neck.

3. They Have Long Beaks

Storks possess a long beak. In the case of storks, it is also very pointed. They use it to hunt small vertebrates in the water. Flamingos also have a long beak, but it is not straight and narrow; instead, it is curved and broad. They use it to sift through the water for small creatures.
