1st place: Bobfish

Deep, man! Down at depths of 1,968-3,937 feet (600-1,200 meters), where not even a ray of light gets through, there’s a animal that’s as ugly as sin. This animal’ body is made up of a kind of jelly, like frogspawn. The word jelly comes from the Latin and means “to freeze”. And most people would be so shocked on seeing this creature that they would be lost for words. This is the blobfish, which looks like a grumpy old man.

The ugliest animal competition attracted a lot of attention, which is what its organizers wanted. Now the public knows that the blobfish is an endangered species and can help by eating less fish or eating sustainable fish. The blobfish is threatened by deep sea fishing, as it has no natural predators.
